Unlike a normal microscope, where you look down the microscope directly, the confocal microscope uses lasers to shine a light on a tiny spot on your sample. It then detects the light that reflects back from whatever you’re looking at and processes it to make an image. Because the laser is so focused, you can look at different points in your sample to build up a 3D image.
