Hi – sorry for the delay in answering I’ve been on a course playing with sea life, which is pretty good considering your question!
I loved it – unfortunately when doing my deep sea work most of the sea life has died long before it gets to me but it is amazing studying it and nothing compares to seeing it up close and personal.
The course I was on this weekend was about teaching marine science in school, so I was rock pooling and playing on the beach looking for cool things under rocks and in caves. It was brilliant its been ages since I’ve just went to the beach to have a play and I found loads of cool sea life like gobies, cushion star fish, porcelain crabs, edible crabs, sea weeds, barnacles and anemones. It was amazing there was so much to see.
Working with animals when they are alive or in the wild can be difficult but I still prefer it to looking at them in the lab – there is nothing quite like seeing an animal in its natural habitat whether its a coral reef or rocky shore in the UK.
I saw your question and wanted to drop you a line to say hi – even though I’m off in the drug zone. Working with animals is great fun – although if it’s a zoo or aquarium you do spend a lot of time either feeding them or cleaning up their poo. One of the best things about live animals is that they are so unpredictable and can give you some great surprises. My all-time favourite has to be cleaning a seahorse tank & they swam over and used my fingers like they would use seaweed to hang on to. My all-time low point though – not paying attention when feeding a ray (like a sting ray but no sting) and he bit off the top of my finger. They have VERY sharp teeth!
