Hi Callum. My work is focussed in the Caribbean and Latin America at the moment, on two volcanoes in particular. One is the Soufrière Hills Volcano (which you can see pictures of on my profile) and the other volcano is Tungurahua, in Ecuador. I have spent almost a year at the Soufrière Hills Volcano so far, but not yet been to Tungurahua…where I will be going in May! I am working in two places so that I can compare and contrast two different volcanoes.

Hi Callum I’m based in Ross-onWye in herefordshire but I do most of my work in London or in Europe – mostly Paris, Brussels, Dublin, Strasbourg and Bilbao. The work I do mostly effects Europe.

But I’ve worked in Japan, Canada, Spain and Fiji.

Most of my work is based in a number of laboratories dotted around the country. Ive made quite a few links with scientists in other countries such as Taiwan, Iceland, Spain and Italy so I get to go over there and work with them on their projects. So always a good opportunity to go visit the country. Ive just come back from Japan which I really enjoyed. The labs there are so different from here, so much more high tech! But managed to go do some hiking and camping in the mountains where I had a few close encounters with bears.
Also I get to go on field trips with university students a couple times a year. Last time was to Iceland where we were studying bacteria living in and around steamingly hot geothermal vents and geysers and on top of glaciers. Bacteria get everywhere and studying how they have adapted to these extreme environments is really interesting.

My work is based at St James’ Hospital in Leeds (not very exotic!). Its a big hospital with one of the largest cancer care centres in the UK – its really important for us to be near a hospital like this as we work on samples of tumour from patients. Most of the scientists we work with are in the UK (there is a lot of really good cancer research in the UK), so I mainly go to exiting places like Bristol, Manchester and London! I occasionally get to go abroad for conferences, to places like America, Canada and Italy, which is fun.
