For many people, volcanoes provide a lot of things that are good. They create very fertile soils, so are brilliant for farming. People have, and always will live near them, so volcanologists need to understand when they are going to erupt, and how to tell people about the dangers.

In some parts of the world where volcanoes are really active there isn’t much other land for the people to go so they have to live in the shadow of the volcano and hope for the best.
A lot of island states in the Pacific are quite small and when volcanoes erupt people can’t just get in the car and drive away, they have to go out on boats into the ocean and wait.
Often if lava destroys their homes they become refugees and have to move to another country.
