Well ultimately volcanoes occur as a result of the Earth being very hot beneath its cool crust. The energy from the heat either directly makes the rocks melt, or drives chemical reactions that cause them to melt. Molten rock is less dense than non molten rock, so it rises up towards the surface. If there is enough of it, then it can force its way out onto the surface in an eruption.
